Speech by the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau, on the occasion of the launch of the Joburg 2040 Growth and Development Strategy (GDS), FNB Stadium “Soccer City” – Johannesburg: 20 October 2011

Fellow Citizens, honoured guests, friends, it is indeed a great honour and privilege for me to share this day with you and to be part of this very important event – the launch of the Joburg 2040 Growth and Development and Strategy (GDS).

Not far from here, fifty six years ago, the Freedom Charter was adopted at the Congress of the People in Kliptown on the 26th of June 1955.

The Freedom Charter talks of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and a prosperous society as well as one characterised by socio-economic prosperity and advancement.

The Freedom Charter requires all of us; the government, civil society organisations as well as local communities to work together. It is in the same spirit that we have included all voices to collaborate in producing our shared vision for Johannesburg. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Evening fellow citizens and residents of Johannesburg.

Fellow Citizens, I stand here today very grateful for the trust you have bestowed in us to lead this city. We have a duty to ensure that the values that we stood for in the May 2011 municipal elections remain at the centre of our work.

Tonight is a very special occasion for all of us who reside in Johannesburg. It is special because the people of Johannesburg have helped shape the future of our city. And it is the people of Johannesburg that have answered the call by its leaders to walk alongside them and talk to them about the city we share, the vision we have and our hopes for the future. Fellow Councillors, like most of us who are gathered here today, I feel greatly honoured and privileged to be part of this auspicious occasion – the launch of the Joburg 2040 Strategy.

MMC, please allow me to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Executive Mayor, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau for having guided us through this long journey. Through his leadership, we can confidently and proudly say that our roadmap to the future is clear.
